❝It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried. Experience is, for me, the highest authority. The touchstone of validity is my own experience. No other person’s ideas, and none of my own ideas, are as authoritative as my experience❞ – Carl Rogers
I am a counsellor who provides a safe, warm and comfortable place for clients to explore what is making them feel unhappy with their lives, and enable them to explore how they can move forward or adjust to what they are experiencing, to be the person they want to be and lead a happy fulfilling life.
Our lives can change in a second sometimes this is a good experience, but when it changes and makes us feel unhappy, sometimes alone and overwhelmed with life, we want this to change, however this can be painful and difficult to do alone, I believe counselling gives the client a safe place to explore these feelings without being judged or directed and most important to be listened to.
I use a person centered approach to counselling, but use other approaches if I feel this will be useful to the client.
I work with young people from the ages of 12, and adults I have experience of face to face, telephone and Skype counselling.
I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, coming to me with a diverse range of problems. As a fully-qualified counsellor I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and abide by their code of ethics. I am also a verified member of Psychology Today, the Counselling Directory and the MCAPN.
My Qualifications are as follows:
Counselling gives you time and space to work through your problems. Therapy helps you gain a different perspective on problems and issues. Therapy provides a safe, non-judgemental and respectful environment. Counselling can help you regain wellbeing and balance in your life.
It’s kept 100% confidential, we only ever discuss or do what the client feels comfortable with and we just openly discuss what issues or problems you are having.
Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with someone who will listen with sensitivity and empathy – and without judgement. In the therapy space thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.
Trouble with a relationship; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression – many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of what’s causing these problems – and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.
Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.
People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through counselling:
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Grief, loss or bereavement
Problems with addiction
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Issues relating to sexuality
Difficulties at work or in retirement
Problems with family or school life
I also deliver Mental health training to organisations
My fees are £40-45 for 50 minute sessions.
All sessions are on online or over phone due to the ongoing Covid situation at the moment. Concessions are available and can be discussed.

“I was feeling very lost and desperate when I found Arefa’s profile on the eclectic page. I knew after I have gone through so much during my childhood and adulthood I was going to have to dig into this ordeal to heal. My pain from the past was affecting my thoughts and behaviour which was bleeding into my present. This was affecting all my relationships; as a mother, daughter, and wife. The problem was I knew nothing about healing, how its done, how the journey starts. I looked into therapy and was reluctant due to past experiences with counselling.
I read about Arefa on the Eclectic page and I felt she had the experience in the areas I needed help with. I contacted Arefa on a day where I felt like I was going to tip over the edge. Instantly just offloading onto a non-judgmental, calm person who made me feel normal and could show me empathy helped. I knew I had made the right choice after the first phone call.”
“Talking to Arefa is more than just offloading. Arefa helps me understand my emotions, and behaviours – I would not have been able to understand this alone. I feel like I am learning to have a better relationship with myself and I am learning about myself as a person. I feel Arefa teaches me to be kind and gentle with myself. Arefa speaks to me in a way where I do not have to share anything I don’t want to, but I share it because I feel there is a purpose behind it.
I finally get to release all things I’ve kept in because of issues I am facing being taboo subjects or everyone around is too emotionally involved with my issues. Telling family and friends was sometimes the worst thing I did and dangerous, as their advice was coming from a place of their hurt and unhealed traumas. When I was low I was even taking bad advice and later regretted my actions.
Talking to a skilled therapist who behaves like a friend (but isn’t) who helps me to feel looked after and to love myself while thinking rationally is a really good feeling and has been life changing in order to be a better version of myself from which others can benefit too. Lastly but most importantly therapy from a Muslim sister is something I cannot recommend enough, because all advice is given from a Deen perspective and nothing can be better than that”
“After struggling with my mental health and going back and forth between trying to reach out and deciding not to go ahead, I reached out to Eclectic House for a therapist. Arefa’s details were passed on to me and as usual I hesitated to make contact. However, i finally found the courage to. From the moment I had my first session with Arefa I knew that I had been guided to seek help with Arefa for the benefits that I knew I would receive in my mental and emotional health. Combining Islamic and Holistic therapy into one has been the best decision for me to pursue therapy with her. Her knowledge and abilities to guide and help reflect on my personal issues has been a blessing during such a dark time in my life as I’m sure others are feeling too. She’s always been easy and comfortable to speak and offered a range of different ways to undertake our sessions, alongside always remaining flexible, always ensuring her clients needs are at the forefront”
“Thank you for everything and I look forward to continuing my self development with her for the on-going fututre”
“After folllowing Arefa’s page for a short while, her posts really resonated with me and what I was going through – this encouraged me to reach out to Arefa during a very difficult time in my life. I felt I was being actively listened to and that I could offload, knowing I would not be judged. Not only was Arefa extremely attentive, empathetic, professional and made me feel comfortable, she helped me gain the clarity that I needed, over my emotions and my situation. She listened carefully to my difficulties and provided a safe space to express my feelings and helped me see things more clearly.”
“The therapy has allowed me to make effective decisions and will hopefully continue to lead to positive changes in my life. I am thankful to have found Arefa’s page through Eclectic House, I highly recommend her, she is amazing at her job”
“Salaam,Just wanted to say thank you so much and grateful that you were my therapist. In my family, I was one of the first people to seek help as counselling/mental health is nonexistent in Asian cultures. I was reluctant to acknowledge and recognize the generational traumas that were passed and wanted to put a stop to it. The thought of me passing this trauma to my future kids gave me the motivation to seek help and take the first step.Alhamdulillah, I am blessed as I got the best counselor in my first search itself. Sis Areefa helped me realize my emotions and my unhealthy coping mechanism. She provided me with healthier ways to cope with my emotions and I always looked forward to her sessions as it was a safe space for me where I got my true self
In the future, if I needed the session again then I am pretty sure I will approach sis Areefa”
